The
Leon Valley
Historical Society
is
dedicated to researching, documenting
and commemorating the heritage and
history of Leon Valley and surrounding
areas. Our goal is to provide for
education of the community through
learning experiences regarding this
history in the school system, scouting
organizations and other groups in the
proposed living history center at the
Huebner-Onion Homestead and Leon Valley
Huebner Onion Natural Area.. We are a
501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, run
entirely by volunteers.
We
maintain a local history collection in
the Kenneth & Esther Alley Historical
Collection at the Leon Valley Library.
Currently we are investigating and
restoring the Huebner Onion Homestead, a
two story structure along Bandera road
that dates to the 1850s which is listed
in the National Register of Historic
Places. The site was a stage coach stop,
and has a stack stone barn and cook
house on the premises. We are also
leasing a 36 acre parcel of land
adjacent to the Huebner Onion Homestead
which was formerly part of the Homestead
property. We are developing the land as
the Leon Valley Huebner Onion Natural
Area with primitive trails to view the
birds, plants and fauna and serve as an
outdoor classroom..
Quarterly
meetings are held at the Leon Valley
Library, at 7:00 pm.
Guests are welcome.
