The
Leon Valley
Leon
Valley
is
dedicated to researching, documenting,
preserving and commemorating the
heritage and history of Leon Valley and
surrounding areas. Our goal is to provide
for education of the community through
learning experiences regarding the
history in the school system and in the
future living history and education center at the
Huebner-Onion Homestead and Stagecoach
Stop.
Currently we
are restoring the circa 1862 Huebner Onion
Homestead, a two story limestone structure
at 6613
Bandera Road dating back to the early 1850s.
The
present focus on restoration is to raise
money for a comprehensive Master
Plan and Site Assessment. The firms of
Ford, Powell and Carson and Mainstreet Architects have agreed to work with
us on this plan which will be compiled
into a book which will in turn be
used to raise funds for the actual
project. The Society has recently
applied for a Texas Preservation Trust
matching grant of $20,000 which will
help in raising the estimated cost of
$67,000.

The
present focus on restoration is to get
the porch back on the homestead to
prevent further deterioration of the
"original" front limestone walls.
The society has recently
applied for a Texas Preservation Trust
"matching" Grant to help with the
projected cost of $45,000.
It
is time to move forward. We need
the community-at-large donations and
business, memorial donors. An 8th
annual Bloomin” Onion & Bluegrass Dinner
and Silent Auction Benefit is scheduled
for Friday, October 24th,
2008 at 6:30 pm). For more information
call Barbara Fryer @6840885 or Carol
Poss @ 684-8586.
The
Homestead was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
