  Description

T
he Leon Valley
Historical  Society is dedicated to researching, documenting, preserving and commemorating the heritage and history of Leon Valley and surrounding areas. Our goal is to  provide for education of the community through learning experiences regarding this history in the school system and in the living history museum and education center at the Huebner-Onion Homestead.

We have a 10 year lease for the 36 acres of "green space" land from the City of Leon Valley.  Adjacent and across Huebner Creek from the homestead.  The society has constructed primitive trails with signage of flora and fauna so that this area may be used for educational experiences, animal, birding, insect and plant identification.

Also providing access to Mr. Joseph Huebner’s gravesite and to serve as an outdoor classroom and educational walks.  Current access to this area is through Raymond Rimkus Park from dawn to dusk.

Watch our calendar of events for future announcements regarding onsite outdoor classroom programs and events, coming in the fall of 2008.

  Natural Area Progress

T
he Natural Area  now has mown trails marked by signage.  Recent rains have caused some debris to wash into the area, so another clean-up day will need to be held soon.

Special thanks go to: Roger Christensen, for single-handedly gathering about a mile of barbed wire from the 36 acres (a former ranch) into neat spools; Tom and Pamela Newton, for hand- crafting our beautiful Natural Area signs; and Mike Mac Donald for his cataloging of plants and animals, daily monitoring, and reports on the Natural Area and Homestead.

Thanks also goes to Troop 17-Boy Scouts and Nick Stewart seeing his Eagle Scout Project come true in restoring the Joseph Huebner grave site on the 36 acres. The volunteer group was comprised of some 50 scouts, parents and City of Leon Valley over  a 6 weeks to complete.

Additional thanks go to some 40 local volunteers that have participated in various natural area cleanup days over the past 2 years.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENTS ON THE 36 ACRES

Removal of pig pens and further removal of ranch wire from the property--- Councilman Jack Dean and his grandson, Cody, spearheaded this effort with the help of Leon Valley Public Works.  Christine Collings also removed extensive ranch wire.

Addition of stepping stones at the two water crossings---Al Uvietta and Public Works made these simple but very effective improvements to allow easier crossings at two places in the Natural Area.

Exposure of black plastic installed by SAWS in Huebner Creek -- heavy rains exposed large sheets of black plastic in the creek, which Saws had installed over its sewer line.  We will seek SAWS help in improving this unsightly condition.

  PLANNED ACTIVITIES 2010-2011
Continue to conduct scout troop tours and programs.

Work with the San Antonio River Authority and SAWS to improve the degraded Huebner Creek area on the property.

Work with UTSA and South Texas Archeological Association to identify Native American artifacts on the property.

Continue to identify species of plants and animals, and add to our lists.

Develop a plan for the “racing pigeon houses” near Bandera Road frontage.

Develop a plan for preservation and enhancement of the forest, including protection of saplings, with help of local forestry experts.

Develop a plan to improve the 1882 Joseph Huebner gravesite in the center of the natural Area.

Increase our volunteer base.
